When selecting your Infrared LED ...

Connecting your LED's the wrong way around may damage them. The Cathode (Negative) will be the shorter lead, and the Anode (Positive) will be the longer one. Sometimes there is a flattened edge on the LED to identify the Cathode.

Never connect your LED directly to the power supply. You will need to add a resistor into the circuit. There is a good wizard at [[1]] that can assist in identifying the correct ones.
